Brandon’s Confidence

Some say there’s a fine line between confidence and cockiness, I would tend to agree with this. A lot of what confidence is about is simply the way you hold yourself, your attitude and knowing your self-worth. Cockiness however is over inflating yourself to look like someone you really are not. There are some easy ways to build confidence and one of the easiest ways starts with the clothes you wear. If you dress with pride, you’ll come across as more confident to others.

So often guys simply say they want to wear something that’s comfortable. There’s nothing wrong with this, but being comfortable does not mean you have to look like you just rolled out of bed. A little bit of attention to detail and pride in what you’re wearing can go a long way. Here are five simple tips for guys that can make a huge difference:

  1. Learn how to iron. Living in Hawaii Aloha Shirts are the norm and dress shirts are starting to become everyday work wear as well. These shirts should be ironed to look their best. A five minute run over with an iron can take you from looking sloppy, to sharp and put together. If you don’t know how to iron, there are several good tutorials on YouTube. Or ask your mother or grandmother, they would probably be happy to show you. Extra points if you invest in spray starch.
  2. Food has an expiration date, even soda has an expiration date. Your clothes should also have an expiration date. Go through your closet and dresser at least once a year. Anything that you haven’t worn in over a year should probably be given away. Also, that t-shirt with the holes and mustard stain has to go too.
  3. A neat trend that has emerged recently is bringing back the dress sock. A lot of celebrities and especially sportscasters can be seen showing off some impressive sock game. It’s all about the little touches and socks are a nice way to show off a little bit of style and class without breaking the bank. Too often local guys will wear athletic socks with slacks, this is a big no-no. There’s a reason they’re called gym socks, they’re for the gym. If you wear slacks you should also have dress socks. Nordstrom’s Rack and Macy’s both have a nice selection at affordable prices.
  4. You’ve got the ironed shirt, the dress slacks and even some nice socks. Finish it off with two classics, a nice pair of shoes and matching belt. Let’s face it, guys are lucky. At minimum you really only need two pairs of dress shoes. One black and one brown. This means you need two belts. One black and one brown, then match them to the shoes you’re wearing. It’s simple, clean looking and classy.
  5. Probably the most important thing though is simply finding a look that is right for you. Buy clothes that match your body type and in colors that you think you look good in. They should fit well and not constrict or hang off of you. You don’t want to look like a stuffed sausage or a little kid wearing his dad’s shirt. And once you do find a look that works, then stick to it. Guys are lucky in the sense that we don’t have to be all that creative with what we wear, find a look that works and go with it.

Your style is exactly what it is, yours. By keeping things simple and buying clothes that match your personality and body type you can go out there and feel confident in what you’re wearing. And if you feel confident, you’ll look confident and others will notice that too. Dress to impress, dress with pride and dress for you.

BJ Penn: UFC Gym

From the bikinis creeping under cropped tops to the high number of beach occupants, we all can tell summer is upon us. Whether you’re working or a part of the lucky few enjoying summer vacation, there is one thing we can all take some time off to enjoy during this time- going to the beach! There are so many beach BBQ’s to join or spending some time just laying out solo. What better way to show off and be proud of your body? Some people say working out is boring or too hard. I believe working out is far from that. It’s something that does take hard work and dedication, but once you see results you’ll be hooked. I’ve been going to UFC gym BJ Penn for about a year and a half now, and I can’t tell you enough good things about it. Today I’m only going to cover a few. First off their equipment is very new and modern. They offer equipment ranging from free weights to punching bags. They also hold a wide variety of classes, which include Brazilian jujitsu, boxing, yoga, zumba, and more. Personal trainers can assist brand new gym goers that aren’t quite sure how to get started. Also, fellow gym goers are another great resource to learn about different workouts and diets. I find myself learning more, and more as I talk to different people.  Another cool thing is they play every single Pay Per View fight that you and your friends can enjoy. Outside food vendors sell a variety of good food during these hosted PPV fights. My girlfriend just starting coming with me and she can’t get enough of it. The hospitality of the workers and fellow gym goers is great! I’m not trying to advertise for them or anything like that. I’m just a guy who enjoys working out and is trying to get others to do the same.

Summer Movies

Summer has just begun, and so has the great stream of films that are out, or going to be, in our theaters. It is that special time of year when you have all the time in the world to do what your heart desires –going to the movies can be one of them.

Going to the theatres to watch a movie may seem something extremely simple; however, it’s a great date idea, or a good place to hang out and bond with friends! Many emotional, humorous, and thrilling await your eyes, and here are just some of them:

Screen Shot 2014-06-08 at 11.36.11 PM

Maleficent: Maleficent, played by Angelina Jolie, shows us the untold side to the story of “The Sleeping Beauty.” The film makes surprising twist to the villain that we have come to know, and gives up e’s kiss” may truly be.

X-Men: Days of Future Past: An ongoing war to eradicate mutants has placed our heroes’ lives in danger. The only way to stop the current situation was to go back to the past and to change the ripples of time.

Neighbors: When moving into a new neighborhood, it is always important to get along in the community in which you live in; however, this was not the case for Mac (Seth Rogen) and Teddy (Zac Efron). Once the police was involved, the gauntlet was thrown, and a war began between the two.

The Fault in our Stars: A touching movie about a cancer patient who falls in love with a boy from her cancer support group. The film pulls your emotions and your heartstrings as these two embark on an adventure with their brief lives.

Of course, this list is only a small showcase of the many films that are out there. Many great movies are waiting to be seen, and don’t let me hinder you any further from seeing them by having you read any further. You could always have a “YOLO” moment, and watch a random movie. Who knows, it may be your next favorite without you knowing it!

Cutting Season

To be honest with you, I needed some inspiration with this blog post. I know men love spring as much as everyone else, but I’m sure you heard enough about how to make pastels masculine. So I went to my younger brother for advice with my topic and ironically enough, he was at the gym at the time and he told me to write about “cutting season.” We’ve all heard of it. He told me, “People call winter ‘bulking season’ so you can eat a lot throughout the holidays and spring is ‘cutting season’ so you can get in shape for the beach.” I was not surprised by his suggestion at all because my loving brother is on a fitness binge at the moment so I couldn’t help but agree with his correlation to spring. Other than adding more cardio exercises to your routine, I learned from some extensive research that cutting season is more so the revamping of one’s diet. Here are some foods that can help the “cutting” process:

–       Sesame Seed Oil: Surprisingly, this oil is synonymous with cutting down one’s body fat. It decreases fat storage and increases fat oxidization so this is very beneficial if you’re trying to lose weight. Some body builders intake one tablespoon daily but if you prefer eating the seeds, then take 50 grams per serving into your meal.

–       Leafy Green Vegetables: These greens are excellent when you’re trying to pair protein with your meal. They include so many necessary nutrients that it serves as a double purpose. Make sure you’re getting five servings a day for this to be effective. Examples include: spinach, romaine lettuce, bok choy, sprouts, cabbage, and kale.

–       Salmon: When you’re trying to slim down, your protein should be a high so that you don’t lose the muscle you’ve been working on all winter. Yet, when you don’t want something too fatty, you should opt for salmon instead. Salmon is low in saturated fats yet high in Omega 3’s. This nutrient will balance out your insulin levels thus make it harder for excess fat storage. Plus, salmon goes with just about anything, so this makes a good choice!

Try adding these foods into your diet and don’t forget to drink lots of water to maximize your efforts during this cutting season. To add the cardio in your life, go take a run in your neighborhood! It’s beautiful outside!

Hey Boys,

Shoe Swag

I am guilty of judging a man by his shoes. The brand, how worn they look, and especially if his shoes match the occasion. With job interviews, fancy dinner dates and other important events, a guy needs a nice pair of shoes to complete a classy outfit for a classy occasion. On the same token, classic athletic shoes can pass for upscale affairs. Added bonuses to buying athletic shoes are they’re more affordable and comfortable; two top priorities when shopping right, fellas?

Around prom season, I always hear buzz about what kind of shoes a guy should wear. Classic, clean leather loafers might be the default choice that can do no wrong, some guys want to differentiate (and if the host school allows) by wearing brand new, fashionable athletic shoes. I’ve never had to figure this question out for myself but I put myself in a guy’s shoes (pun intended) and realized I’d want to wear both! Thus, I found beautiful hybrids of the two.

Cole Haan Lunargrand: Luckily, Cole Haan offers their usual line of oxfords, loafers, and boots in various materials such as leather and suede with a comfortable Nike sole. These shoes come in so many different colors that you can buy one for different events. I recommend the LunarGrand wingtip in gray. This shoe is so easy to dress down for a Saturday full of errands to office shoes during the week.

Nike SB Zoom Stefan Janoski Mid “Wingtip”: Janoskis are beginning to be a common Nike shoe that people wear on an everyday basis. So when Nike released a more upscale version of this skate shoe, it definitely turned heads. The shoe features a premium leather upper and the classic wingtip details puts it on another level. It will force people to do a double-take, “Are those Nikes?!”

As a lady, I’d see these shoes on a guy and correlate him with fashionable but still comfortable. These pairs are aesthetically pleasing to any eye. Honestly, as soon as I finish this blog post, I’m gonna check if they make them in my size!

Right Fit,

Special Announcement

For The Good was founded in the fall of 2013 with a simple purpose: to grow and celebrate a community doing things for the good.  Over the past few months, we’ve been humbled by the amount of support and love shown to us from our community and are so excited for the future of For The Good.

We wanted to take this special opportunity to share with all of you our official For The Good logo.  We want to send a big mahalo to Lauren, our talented designer and owner of Yellow Bird Bohemia for creating, what we feel to be, the perfect logo for our company.

When thinking of the look for our logo, we wanted it to represent the community we serve.  The roots of the tree symbolize all of us brining in our different stories, talents, and treasures to nourish and grow our community.  This leads to the strength of our community with the sturdy trunk.  All of which culminate in the beauty and magnitude of the leaves representing the good that has come from a community coming together to do good.

We couldn’t do this without all of your love, support, and aloha.  Thank you so much for being such a crucial part of the For The Good journey and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next!
